The Laws of Sannion

Love this!

This is as ridiculously important to read as it is ridiculously well-written.

Of Axe and Plough

No, this is not about a woman named Clair talking down to you derisively. I know a Clair, and she’s a sweetheart.

My blog post titled Woden v. Odin: Differences?has proved to be my most successful and most widely read blog piece to date. Every day it tops my charts of my daily views, and it is sitting under 10,000 views since I published it last May. With the activity that my blog has, with barely a post a month, and my overall level of networking, I consider this pretty impressive. I understand that there are other widely disseminated bloggers that routinely blow these numbers out of the water, so I am not going to allow it to go to my head. But, as of right now, I have not written anything that has attracted more notice, or more praise. I’m generally proud of it.

My blog also does…

A Methodology for Divination: Necessary Basics

Divination is a sacred, highly dangerous, and important craft. It is one of the ways that we can be aware of our right relationships with the Gods as well as Their wishes and reasons. So, too, it is one of the ways in which we can peer into our futures in order that our present actions are responsible, forwarding reactions – and one of the ways that we can look at our own pasts so that we may understand ourselves more deeply.

When engaging in divinatory and/or oracular workings, it is of the most crucial importance that one fully understands what they are doing, how they are doing it, and why they are doing it. It is important to use the right tools for the work, to be open to all methods of receiving communication, to be secured against false/malicious entities (or to be able to discern from where the information is coming from), and to maintain energetic boundaries properly. Everyone divines differently: the tools, the preparation, the ways in which a diviner receives information, their personal theology, and how they engage with Powers (if at all) all differ between diviners.

I present here my personal protocol with divinatory and oracular work, so that perhaps it can help others. I am a hard polytheist who conducts her services with pure direction from the Gods, so my protocol is directly tied to a theology of hard polytheism and Gods-centered religious practice.

A) Before sitting down to ask a question, make sure that you can actually read for it. Sometimes there are some questions that are not meant to be answered (whether at that particular time or at all) so it is always best to make sure with the Powers that the questions can be read for. If a Power makes it clear to you that They do not wish for you to divine on the question, then the best idea is to respect that verdict. Checking to make sure you can read a question also applies to your personal practice; if you receive a question you’re uncomfortable reading for, you shouldn’t read for it. If someone who asks you for a reading asks something that you have a caveat or taboo for, you shouldn’t read for it.

B) When you have your question, make sure that it is a question written without bias to an outcome. Of course, all questions and situations are unique; however, generally, a good question should always encapsulate the concept but never lean towards one particular outcome. It is one thing to ask, “When will my annoying mother-in-law finally move out?” and another to ask, “What can I be doing, right now, to improve my difficult relationship with my mother-in-law?” The question is perhaps the trickiest and most important part of any reading: words are important, and you need to be both as specific and as open as possible so that you can receive the best guidance.

C) Make sure your space is clean – cleanliness applies both physically and energetically. Make sure that your reading space is tidy and orderly, and that your reading space has been thoroughly cleansed. Put up shields and protect your space so that you can perform a reading as “safely” and well-protected as possible. If you work with a Power or Powers, petition Them to help cleanse your space, protect you during the divination, and to allow you to be as clear a medium as possible for the reading. If you bless or cleanse your divinatory tools, make sure that you have done so.

D) Make sure you are clean. I always take a cleansing shower before and after divinations as I am sensitive to energies and my way of performing divinations has a lot of components. Everyone picks up miasma, so it is imperative to personal receptivity and health that one remains as energetically clean as possible. Energetic cleanliness both protects you and renders you a perfect medium for all information passing through – and it also gives respectable, honorable presentation in the presence of any Power.

E) Offerings are really important. Now, this doesn’t mean that you have to spend your whole paycheck on offerings; if you have no money to spare, a clean glass with water or a slice of wheat bread is a perfect offering (unless the Power in question does not like water or bread- then offer something else). Offer what you can, but offer – it’s proper hospitality to grace a visitor with food and drink when you invite them into your space. It is generally advised that you do not ingest offerings; however, your practice is your practice, and if you have a tradition of (or have been allowed to) ingesting the offerings, by all means honor that.

If you are performing a reading with the following components, offerings are vital:

→ If you work with a Power who protects/guides you in your readings

→ If the question you’re asking is directly tied to a Power

→ EX: Asking if Hekate is interested in starting a relationship with you

F) Practice discernment, but don’t just rule out anything that happens. Discernment is really challenging to cultivate, but it is crucial to have a system where you can determine what is the ‘correct’ information you’re receiving and what is simply ‘in your head’ / ‘chatter.’ Your job as a diviner is to transcribe the information you receive as accurately as possible.

G) Cultivating a good system of determining what comes from the mouth of the Powers and what is simply ‘static’ also greatly depends on your knowledge of how you interpret information. Some people have the clair-senses. Others see visions or are very familiar with using the ‘third eye’ to see and hear the Powers in real time. Some have deep connection with the tools they use, to the point that tools like tarot decks have particular voices, personalities, and ways of giving information. Some have to drink some tea and spend some time in quiet and silence before performing a reading, while others can sink into a reading at a moment’s notice. You are as much a tool as your tarot decks or your runes; in order to be a proper diviner, you must be finely-tuned, and you can’t do that until you understand how you work.

H) When you are finished with your divination, thank the Powers and put everything in its place. Make sure your space is clean and that the offerings are properly disposed of. If you have a protocol of ‘cleaning’ your tools once divinations end, be sure to do that. It is advised that you cleanse after every reading, so if you have a protocol of cleansing/banishing after divinations, go ahead and do that.

Life-Fuckery: my Work, Loki, the past, and the future

Oh, gods. Where the fuck do I begin?

In April I posted about how I had a very frightening experience with Loki. After reading the comments (of course, which I am very grateful for!) I decided that it was just a blip in the godphone and I went on with my life.

But Loki didn’t leave. My experiences with Him were real and there was a reason why He stepped forward as He did. As of July I have begun writing a devotional for the Breaker of Worlds, under His guidance. He wants to share the terrifying parts of Him, to show the great sadness and fury, to write about His Ironwood family (particularly Angrboda).

I think this is the hardest thing I have ever had to do. Every night I am taken from where I am and I am shown Things that I struggle to put into words. Every night I see what He desires for me to see and I write it down; sometimes He simply shows me and sometimes it’s full possession. And I try to figure out how language could properly express all of this anger, this rage and this unyielding, suffocating pain – this madness that crushes light and burns through everything. I have to see Him mourning for His kids, have to see Angrboda showing me the great love and devotion that Loki has for His family under all of the destruction He embodies. With bloodied hands They show me the trials and tribulations of the Ironwood family – because, truly, the Breaker of Worlds is so because His intense, unyielding love for His Family. All the while He dictates what word He wants, what image He wants presented, whether this prose needs work or that poem is finished; sometimes I don’t realize what I wrote until I visit it days later, and that’s when the sorrow rips me apart like a starving wolf.

An acquaintance of mine told me that she would pray that Loki would show me the side of Himself that He shows many: that side of Him that gives His devotees that particular smile, that light in Their eyes whenever They talk about Him. I thought Loki would never answer that prayer, but He did – He made me see it by having me see only the suffering and the bone-crushing pain. I am serving the god who mourns so heavily that the Worlds split open and everything burns.

And I was a fool to think I could get out of this unscathed. I was a fool to think I would be the scribe listening to the words of a god, simply compiling a book scroll by scroll until it was ready to publish. Oh, no, no, no. How stupid. For years I worked on burying all of the memories of my past; I made myself forget it because it was the only way I could deal with not experiencing pain. The only way I could close my wounds was to escape them and forget they were there. I burned all of the photos, stifled all of the memories, and I erased all of the blows and abuses I had received; I don’t remember much before I was nineteen actually.

Yet Loki brought me a great chest and set it on the table. He opened it – and it was every single memory. Everything was unscathed, unburned – as if They had been sitting in a museum all this time and He had plucked them out to bring them to me. As if nothing had happened to them. All of my hard work, my forgetting, was completely undone, set as if it had never happened. And, of course, I lost my shit. I am furious. I am angry, and frightened, and I don’t want to deal with all of my issues and pain. Yet… I know that I am ready to fully face my past, my issues, my history of being abused for years and of struggling and fighting.

Then it finally hit me why this devotional will take three years to complete. It’s not because of Him. It’s because of me.

Big changes are happening. Loki is commissioning me for a devotional while He cracks me open, burns me, and finally allows me to continue my life healed and ready for the future. The spirits and entities are asking much more of me, where I have to establish a more strict protocol and take the level of serious in my binding work to the max. I have my Work with the other gods, my Seership Work, and of course my mundane life; this is the second year of my Master’s degree, so I’ll be writing a master’s thesis while preparing for my next degree (either a second Master’s degree in religion or a PhD in American Religion in order to study contemporary religion, specifically the polytheist communities in the US).  And all the while, Queen Maeve waits for me to dedicate myself to Her as Her devotee, and She my Matron.

But I gave my word to give my life in service to the gods. The gods are taking me at my word. And I will not fail Them, for They are my greatest joy.
